Hearing that you need a root canal can sound intimidating, but the procedure itself is very controlled, precise and designed to relieve pain, not cause it. At our clinic, we walk patients through each step, so they know exactly what is happening and why.

At Clearview Market Dental in Red Deer, we focus on making root canal treatment predictable, comfortable and effective.

Why and When a Root Canal is Needed

A root canal is required when the inner part of the tooth, called the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, cracks in the tooth or repeated dental procedures.

As noted by the Canadian Dental Association, untreated infection inside a tooth can lead to significant pain, swelling and even tooth loss. A root canal removes that infection while preserving the natural tooth structure for chewing.

Step 1: Numbing the Tooth

The procedure begins with local anaesthetic to fully numb the area. This ensures you do not feel pain during treatment. Once the tooth is numb, we test the area to confirm you are comfortable before proceeding.

Step 2: Creating Access to the Tooth

Next, we create a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp inside. This allows us to access the root canals, which are narrow pathways that extend down into the roots. This step is precise and controlled, designed to preserve as much of the healthy tooth as possible.

Step 3: Removing the Infection

Using specialized instruments, we carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth. This is the part of the procedure that eliminates the source of pain.

Once the pulp is removed, we clean and disinfect the inside of the canals to remove bacteria and prevent further infection.

Step 4: Shaping and Cleaning the Canals

After the infection is removed, the canals are shaped to prepare them for filling. This step ensures that the inside of the tooth can be sealed properly. We use irrigation solutions to thoroughly clean the area, reducing the risk of any remaining bacteria.

Step 5: Filling the Root Canals

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This seals the space and prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth. The opening in the tooth is then temporarily or permanently sealed, depending on the treatment plan.

Step 6: Restoring the Tooth

In most cases, a tooth that has had a root canal will need a crown. This protects the tooth and restores its strength, allowing you to chew normally again. Without proper restoration, the tooth can become more vulnerable to fracture over time.

After the Procedure

During the procedure, you should feel little to no pain thanks to anaesthetic. Afterward, it is normal to experience mild soreness for a few days as the area heals. Root canal treatment has a high success rate and is one of the most effective ways to save a natural tooth.
